Naukydes was born in Argos and during the Classical period produced numerous works in bronze that are mentioned in ancient sources but unfortunately no longer survive.
Pausanias stated that Naukydes was the brother of Polykleitos and that he was the teacher of a different, probably younger Polykleitos. The statue base of Eukles, however, names Naukydes’ father as Patrokles, who was also the father of the sculptor Daidalos of Sikyon.
A list of Naukydes' output was heavily biased toward statues of Olympic victors, and he worked almost exclusively in bronze.
Below is the most famous example of Naukydes' sculpture: Diskobolos. Reproductions of this statue are available at my online store.
