Joseph Nollekens was born in 1737 London, the son of a Flemish painter. He went to Rome in 1762 where he restored sculptures of the ancients, of Michelangelo and Giambologna while working in the workshop of Bartolomeo Cavaceppi. He became quite adept at Neoclassical sculpting and began to gain a reputation and a fortune. He returned to England and became a member of the Royal Academy. He maintained a large clientele and died in 1823 in London.
Castor and Pollux

Nollekens' Castor and Pollux is a masterful Neoclassical representation of the famous twins of Greco-Roman mythology. I offer a beautiful photograph of this piece for sale.
